Kate and I have decided to record a regular seasonal song slot for Damh the Bard's popular Druidcast. We'll post the chords and words for each song here as they are broadcast.

So kicking off with a useful song for Samhain (Haloween)...

The Cheshire Soul-Caking Song
As featured on Damh the Bard's Druidcast 31

Chorus:

A soul! a soul! a soul-cake!
Please good Missus, a soul-cake!
An apple, a pear, a plum or a cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry,
One for Peter, two for Paul,
Three for Him who made us all.

Verse 1:

God bless the master of this house,
The misteress also,
And all the little children
That round the table grow.
Likewise young men and maidens,
Your cattle and your store;
And all that dwell within your gates,
We wish you ten times more
A soul! A soul! A soul cake etc.

Verse 2:
Down into the cellar,
And see what you can find,
If your barrels are not empty,
We hope you will prove kind.
(We hope you will prove kind,
With your apples and strong beer,
And we'll come no more a-souling
Till this time next year.)
A soul, etc.

Verse 3:
The lanes are very dirty,
My shoes are very thin,
I've got a little pocket
To put a penny in.
If you haven't got a penny
A ha'penny will do;
If you haven't got a ha'penny,
It's God bless you!
A soul, etc

Chords:
There are 4 beats in each bar. Our recording is in Eb so to practice along with our recording, if you are playing guitar or mandolin etc, put your capo at the first fret and play the first set of chords below. Of course you can sing it in any key that suits your voice once you know the song.

chorus:
‌‌|| Dm C Dm / | Dm C Dm / | Dm C Dm C | Dm C Dm C | Dm C Dm G | Dm C Dm G ||

verse:
|| Dm C Dm / | Dm C Dm / | Dm C Dm / | Dm C Dm / |
  Dm C Dm / | Dm C Dm / | Dm C Dm / | Dm C Dm / ||

Aternative chords (even simpler for beginning guitarists!)
|| Em D Em / | Em D Em / | Em D Em D | Em D Em D | Em D Em A | Em D Em A ||

|| Em D Em / | Em D Em / | Em D Em / | Em D Em / |
  Em D Em / | Em D Em / | Em D Em / | Em D Em / ||

If you can’t play chords, you can use a drone (a single note) to accompany yourselves. We used a Jews Harp or Jaw Harp on the recording but you could sing along to any drone or percussion.
